'LAST MAN TURN THE LIGHTS OFF' marks ten years since the last deep coal mine in the UK closed. Kellingley Colliery was situated in North Yorkshire. It was affectionately known as the Big K.

Roger Tiley was commissioned by Keo Films, London, to document the last six weeks of production at the colliery.
Roger Tiley became part of the mining community, with the miners saying, 'you're one of us'. The images in this book certainly illustrate this.

Images in the book include contact sheets showing the workings of a photographer working under difficult conditions. Underground at the pit,  the temperature reached 40 degrees celsius, with humidity and dust causing technical camera conditions.

Roger Tiley spent one year during 1996, documenting the last deep coal mine in the South Wales coalfield. The mine was earmarked to close, but the miners used part of their redundancy to buy the pit.

With an introduction to the book, written by former Pontypridd MP, Dr Kim Howells, Roger was given full access to the colliery, with numerous visits underground.

As camera battery packs were not allowed, he used a technique called, 'painting with light.' This meant miners had to stay still for more than ten seconds, so that the long exposure onto film could be made. This technique was used in the latter part of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, before film became more sensitive to light.

Tower Colliery closed in 2008, and is now the site of  Zip World, a tourist attraction. The pit head winding gear remains, alongside some of the original pit buildings.
