'We are Trannies in the valleys' a quote from Rhian , a steel worker

This is a body of work which investigates transgender and transsexual culture in Wales.

The once heavy industrial communities in South Wales were known for its brutal and dangerous industries, relating to coal mining and steel production. This image has faded over the decades, with the closure of coal mines and the steel industry evaporating into a tiny proportion of employment, to what it was thirty or so years ago. Hard burly men came up from the pit on a Saturday morning, after spending six days working shifts underground, to go straight to play rugby.

But the valleys have changed. Not only the landscape has re moulded itself into the rural communities that were the norm over one hundred and fifty years ago, before the industrial revolution, but there is a new breed of people.

The valleys have become a wonderful place to live, with the green mountains, the excellent rail and road links to nearby towns and cities and he new generation of work. Office jobs; jobs in superstores, thus attracting a diverse selection of people from near and far.

This project looks at transgender people in the valleys. It is still looked upon as 'weird', but more accepted that it would have been thirty years ago.
