A documentary film capturing the last year of coal production in the Dulais Valley, South Wales.
The nearby Nant Helen open cast mine extracted arguably the worlds best anthracite coal from the Welsh hillsides. It was transported to the coal washery near the village of Onllwyn, to be cleaned and prepared for distribution.
Towards the latter years, the washery employed a little over thirty men. Many were ex coal miners who finished their working careers in the coal industry, but working on the surface, rather than underground. They were known as 'sunshine miners'.
The coal washery closed on 6 May 2022, bringing an end to a long history of coal mining in the Dulais Valley.
A unique insight into daily life at the washery, where Roger becomes close to the men who treated him as one of them. This documentary captures the characters working at the washery and their feelings of losing their jobs. 'I loved every minute of making this film, although I felt sad during the last week of filming', Roger remembers. 'It was a privilige to become so close and to be accepted as a film maker. I was made to feel so welcome. I laughed and I cried'.
