In 1990-1991, Roger Tiley made a detailed documentation of the traditional chapels in the South Wales valleys. In the first of two publications, he used a 5x4 field camera to capture on film the many structures of religion spread across the post industrial valley topography.
In the second publication, he ventured into these institutions to capture the people who still follow the tradition of going to chapel on a Sunday.
Since the images were made, many of the chapels have faced closure, due to a diminishing congregation.
