Essay by Roger Tiley

A photographic  journey through the southern Appalachian states of Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky and West Virginia.

Roger Tiley makes a meaningful body of observations capturing the coal regions and the people who live and work in them. His sensitive photographs display an understanding and a closeness that he experiences with his subjects in communities that are all too often portrayed as inter-breeding hillbillies.

The images in this book show the opposite. His pictures display real trust and understanding of the Appalachian people.
